“What does the Lord require of you? Is it to make your own peace? He would as soon require you to make a new heaven and a new earth. Is it to keep your own soul? No more than he requires you to keep the sun in its course. His own arm has wrought salvation, and he will secure it. He requires none of your help here; nay, he disdains the thought: you might as well offer to help him to govern the world. But this he requires of you, ‘to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God;’ and the methods of his grace will enable you to do so.”
I guess if God does no require my help, or advice on the “HEAVENLY STUFF”, I will put all my attention on “EARTHLY MATTERS”….Will work, will work till Jesus comes.
This was sooo… absolutely wonderful! Thanks for sharing it Christina.
Thanks for posting this Christina! I just read a brief bio yesterday of him. These words certainly reflect his clear understanding of his complete dependence upon God’s grace for everything.
Wow! I LOVE John Newton! Interesting that you posted this today right after I watched “Amazing Grace” today! I am always humbled by the examples that were lived out in the days of the Puritans. I long to be sanctified in a way such as they were.
Hi Christa,
I can’t get enough of the Puritan spirit myself! What a rich heritage we have! I watched “Amazing Grace” not too long ago myself. The classic Hymns of the church are such a blessing. Despite the fact that they were written during a different generation their eternal truths still hold today! I also visited your blog! It’s lovely!
Thank you for sharing this quote. I am amazed again and again of God’s grace!
Life would be so much easier if we would stop trying to help God. We take on responsibilities that are His, and they become our burdens. The solution is to “cast all our cares upon Him” and to rest in Him. Then we will be able to “do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him” through His grace.
