True Peace is Not the Absence of Conflict

December 10, 2014 by Christina

The_sinking_of_the_Steamship_Ville_du_HavreThe story behind one of my favorite Gospel hymns is recounted in James Boice’s commentary on John.  If you aren’t familiar with the history, take a moment to read.

“In 1874 a French steamer called the Ville du Havre was on a homeward voyage from America when a collision with a sailing vessel took place. The damage to the steamer was considerable, and as a result it sank quickly with the loss of nearly all who had been on board. One passenger, Mrs. Horatio G. Spafford, the wife of a lawyer in Chicago, had been en route to Europe with her four children. On being informed that the ship was sinking she knelt with her children and prayed that they might be saved or, if not, that they might be willing to die, if that was God’s will.

anna spafford cableWhen the ship went down, the children were all lost. Mrs. Spafford was rescued by a sailor who had been rowing over the spot where the ship had sunk and found her floating in the water. Ten days later, when she reached Cardiff, she sent her husband the message: “Saved alone.”

This was a great blow, a sadness hardly comprehensible to anyone who has not lost a child. But though a great shock, it did not destroy the peace that either of the parents, who were both Christians, had from Jesus.

Spafford wrote as a testimony to the grace of God in his experience:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea-billows roll-
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

This is the meaning of the Christian’s peace. It is not an absence of conflict or any other kind of trial or disappointment. Rather it is contentment and trust in God in spite of such circumstances.”

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:27).

Hay Una Fuente Sin Igual

December 8, 2012 by Christina

Earlier today I was thinking about my abuelita  and how I used to watch her as she dutifully went about  her daily chores singing the hymns of the church.  She had so many favorites. William Cowper’s, “There is a Fountain” was one of them. Though I feel certain she didn’t know anything about who penned the hymn,  you can read all about God’s faithfulness towards the tender soul who was William Cowper here.  In the meantime, this is a beautiful rendition sung in Spanish by a men’s choir somewhere in Los Angeles.  I hope you enjoy it! I know my abuela would!

The Most Important Banquet Of All

November 20, 2012 by Christina

Funny thing about studying doctrine — once a teaching gets a hold of your mind, you start to see it everywhere. The doctrine of “Justification by Faith” teaches that what God demands He provides.  Piper sums it up nicely, “God requires two things of us: punishment for our sins and perfection in our lives. Our sins must be punished, and our lives must be righteous. But we cannot bear our own punishment (Ps. 49:7-8), and we cannot provide our own righteousness. “None is righteous; no, not one” (Rom. 3:10). Therefore, God, out of His immeasurable love for us, provided His own Son to do both. Christ bears our punishment, and Christ performs our righteousness. And when we receive Christ (John 1:12), all of His punishment and all of His righteousness is counted as ours (Rom. 4:4-6; 5:1, 19; 8:1; 10:4; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:8-9).”

This gospel hymn, so rich in biblical theology, expresses all we have to be thankful for. There is much! One day when you were at war with God – not looking for peace, God subdued you and miraculously opened your eyes. He didn’t do this because He saw something special, spiritual, or even willing in you. He did it because He is Sovereign.Whereas you should have been an object of His wrath, you received mercy.  He forgave all your sins (and there were many!) and He covered you in the righteousness of His perfect Son, Jesus Christ.  And one day, when this life is over, you will be seated, clothed in robes of righteousness, at the most important banquet of all!

How Sweet and Awful is the Place

How sweet and awful is the place
With Christ within the doors,
While everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores.

While all our hearts and all our songs
Join to admire the feast,
Each of us cries, with thankful tongues,
“Lord, why was I a guest?”

“Why was I made to hear Thy voice,
And enter while there’s room,
When thousands make a wretched choice,
And rather starve than come?”

‘Twas the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly forced us in;
Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

Pity the nations, O our God,
Constrain the earth to come;
Send Thy victorious word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.

We long to see Thy churches full,
That all the chosen race May,
with one voice and heart and soul,
Sing Thy redeeming grace.

Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

I’m holding to the unseen hand

January 28, 2011 by Christina

I thought this hymn went hand in hand with yesterday’s devotional.

As we come to the close of another week, I am so thankful for His mercies that were, as He promised, new every morning. May God bless you this weekend and, by His grace, keep you holding to the unseen hand that will lovingly lead you safely to your true inheritance.

Christ’s love and blessings to you.
