Painful exertions

June 14, 2010 by Christina

“God would not rub so hard if it were not to fetch out the dirt that is ingrained in our natures. God loves purity so well He had rather see a hole than a spot in His child’s garments.”

– William Gurnall

“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” (Matthew 5:29)

How willing we should be… yet how often we aren’t, to see that trials, tribulations, persecutions show us how sinful we truly are; how in need of God’s grace in Christ we are. We need the truth of eternity stamped upon our eyelids. We need the extent of God’s love displayed at the cross branded upon our hearts. We are in need of His grace to cut off and pluck out all that hinders us from God having His will and good pleasure in us, for His glory.

    Thank you for sharing, sister.

    Dear Christina,

Thanks for this post. Recently I ran across Zechariah 13:9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are My people,’ And they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.'”

I also, wanted to thank you for your encouraging comment on my C.S. Lewis evaluation part 1. Needless to say writing about these issues is not appreciated by many (especially Christians). However, thankfully I am only judged by God as to how I earnestly contend for His Word and His Son. May God continue to bless you and this ministry to the glory of His name. In Christ alone, Charisse

      Hi Charisse,

I have seen your comments on brother Jon’s blog. It is an absolute pleasure to meet you!

Yes, I’m sure that you didn’t tickle too many fancies when you questioned the orthodoxy of someone as popular as C.S. Lewis. Discerning between the spirit of truth and the spirit of error seems to grow more and more challenging by the day. It seems like the line gets finer every second. I told someone recently that I never imagined that Apologetics would be largely for those who professed to be believers!

Test the spirits, see if they are from God, reject what is false, and cleave to what is true. What is our alternative? There is none!
