After a frightful day of failure and defeat, the eternal truths expressed in this beautiful poem, penned by Horatius Bonar, are like oil to my soul.
What a beautiful thing it is that ” he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).
Salvation is not of works but according to His mercy!
Allelujia!

Thy works, not mine, O Christ, speak gladness to this heart;
They tell me all is done; they bid my fear depart.
To whom, save Thee, who canst alone
For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
Thy pains, not mine, O Christ, upon the shameful tree,
Have paid the law’s full price and purchased peace for me.
To whom, save Thee, who canst alone
For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
Thy cross, not mine, O Christ, has borne the awful load
Of sins that none in Heav’n or earth could bear but God.
To whom, save Thee, who canst alone
For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
Thy death, not mine, O Christ, has paid the ransom due;
Ten thousand deaths like mine would have been all too few.
To whom, save Thee, who canst alone
For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
Thy righteousness, O Christ, alone can cover me:
No righteousness avails save that which is of Thee.
To whom, save Thee, who canst alone
For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?
Christina your blog always encourages me and reminds me of what a gift God has given us in eternal salvation. Sometimes I get so caught up in my own problems, no matter how hard they might be and I forget that because of God’s mercy and grace we have an eternal home to long for….things of this world will pass away, and we will have no more tears or pain. Only the joy of sitting at the feet of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Thank you so much for what you do my sweet Sister in Christ! I love you!
Thank you Teresa!
You are such a precious sister to me and I thank God for our friendship.
This road can get awfully rugged. We must remind each other of the forgiveness of sins we have in Christ, and of this great salvation that we are all prone to take too lightly.
Praying for you my dear friend and sister!
Horatius Bonar was Andrew’s older brother. The elder Bonar penned possibly more hymns than Isaac Watts or Charles Wesley. He wrote hundreds of tracts. Yet, it was his desire that everything he wrote be destroyed at his death, for he wanted nothing of himself remembered; that only Christ, and Christ alone, be remembered of his ministry. Several of his closest friends and most devout disciples did, in fact, destroy volumes and volumes of his work, yet there were some, who saw the incredible beauty and majesty of Christ in what the Lord allowed Mr. Bonar to express.
Of those relatively few hymns, tracts, books, and booklets that remain, many, like myself, have been tremendously blessed.
Thank you for posting this, dear sister.
This is beautiful Christina and refocuses our affections where they need to be. I know your day was difficult – we may lose some battles, but Christ our Victor will win the war!
And what interesting info brother Jon has shared about Horatius!! How thankful I am that at least some of his works were retrieved!
¡Gracias Cristina!, ¡Qué hermoso poema!
Bendiciones.
¡Mucho amor para ti, mi hermana hermosa!
¡Que el Señor bendiga a usted y su familia!
